Attend this session to learn about how the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) prepares you to become a global citizen, equipped to respond to the changes and challenges that affect our local and global communities. Transitioning to UGA, as an incoming freshman or transfer student can feel like an overwhelming process. In this workshop, DAE Coaches share ten essentials for student success in getting acclimated to the UGA campus.

At this workshop students will tour the newly renovated learning center and learn about all the ways in which to appropriately use the DAE’s resources, academic coaching, tutoring, and campus expertise to help ensure you reach your goals at UGA, your academic progression through major, and overall degree completion.

This presentation provides insights on organizing your coursework and effectively managing your time and priorities.

Read Between the Lines: Effective Reading and Text Comprehension Strategies

Students will learn to read between the lines and use active, metacognitive learning strategies to maintain focus and manage the heavy reading load required for success in college.

Academic Honesty at UGA

Students will learn from UGA’s Office of Academic Honesty about policies and strategies to avoid problems using technologies like Quizlet, CourseHero, Chegg, and GroupMe.

Effective Writing In College

This workshop reviews some essentials of good sentence construction and strategies for analysis. Students will learn the difference between summary of information and analysis of information. Students will also learn strategies for avoiding high frequency errors in terms of sentence construction and punctuation.

Become a Better Note-taker

Students will learn to make a conscious effort to listen, pay attention, and actively organize information from lectures and readings to solidify their understanding master the course content.

Strategies for Success in Science 

Students will learn metacognitive strategies and techniques to ensure they master the content, are able to explain it, and to help them prepare for the new, unseen questions presented on tests and exams.

Test Preparation Strategies

Students will learn ways to: 1). better predict and prepare for difficult test questions, 2). practice problems under test-like conditions, and 3). get “in sync” with their professors.

Managing Motivation 

Students will learn the power of using controllable, modifiable, and internal explanations instead of seemingly uncontrollable, permanent and external factors to explain and improve their academic performance.

Avoid Plagiarism (I)

Students will learn strategies for giving credit where credit is due, citation use and abuse, techniques for introducing sources, and proper punctuation in citations.

Avoid Plagiarism (II)

Students will learn the why’s, when’s, and how’s to paraphrase as well as basic ground rules for citation.

Studying in Groups

This workshop will help students learn how to leverage group study strategies as they seek to master the material and prepare for test and exams. Students will learn how to utilize the strengths of others and groups help compensate for individual members’ weaknesses. Students will also learn the “do’s” and “don’t’s” of how to study in groups.

Final Exam Test Preparation Strategies

Students will learn how to best organize and manage their time, efforts, and learning strategies in preparation for all types of tests and final exams (essay, multiple choice, and short answer).
