Reacting to the Past

The Division of Academic Enhancement hosts the Reacting to the Past Program at the University of Georgia.

Reacting to the Past is an award-winning, game-based pedagogy that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries and gives students and faculty unique opportunities to engage in active learning.

Created by Mark C. Carnes at Barnard College, Columbia University to enliven his first-year seminars, Reacting now contributes to learning environments across the world at over 300 institutions. Reacting consists of elaborate games, set in a specific time and place. Students play roles in a structured multi-day or multi-week game, speaking and writing in character on issues of the day. Faculty serve as gamemasters and offer instruction as guide and mentor all while calling on their disciplinary expertise.
